Social Bookmarking Journal Entry (Delicious.com) (NETS I & V)

Delicious.com is a website that keeps all the address of different websites you visit all on one page. You can find websites from friends as well as organize into different labels and tags the different websites you have saved. It is a great way to organize all the websites you enjoy as well as keep important websites altogether.

Task 1: I thought the Designs for Democracy was a great website for history. On the cite I saw a lot of drawings, paintings, and designs of previous history. It could be very helpful for kids to use as a primary source. Primary sources are great because kids can go back and find out what happened in the past and also see and have actual evidence of the past.

Task 2: The groups who are impacted by achievement gaps are between students who are white or black, rich or poor, looks at the differences in student performance in students from similar backgrounds across all school systems and classrooms. There are four distinct gaps in education; United States and other nations, black and Latino students and white students, between students of different income levels, and similar students schooled in different systems or regions. The three areas I chose were make sure your school has a mission statement that commits to cultural competence as an integral component of all it’s activities, network with other schools that are developing and implementing culturally competent systems, and engage school staff in discussions and activities that offer an opportunity to explore attitudes, beliefs, and values related to cultural diversity and cultural competence. I picked these ones because I felt that they had the most importance to them. I like to teach others about different cultures and beliefs. I also think it’s great to get others involved and to get other schools involved.

Task 3:I took the quiz and got cyber risky. I think the things listed were from when I was in high school because we are a lot meaner when we are younger and immature. I looked at Instant Messaging 101 and found that it is harder to trace someone behind and IM than someone through email. It talked about using a logging or monitoring product to help if anything goes wrong. The article said not to ban IM but to know what’s going on and be aware. It is important in a class that you know your kids are not using IM in the wrong way, it is however good to teach them how to use it the correct way and make it fun.

Task 4: In Subject Area I found kid stuff and there were a bunch of websites for kids to go on toe find out information. There is stuff on Disney, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and tons of other fun websites, that are safe and that kids can access. I could use this in class and have kids do partner work and tell us about the website they picked. Under Teacher’s Helpers I picked Bulletin Board Ideas. I picked this one because I love bulletin boards and I thought it was cool that it had all these ideas and showed you some of the boards. The page can help you and your class to have fun and interactive bulletin boards.

Task 5: My top three intelligences were (75%) Intrapersonal, (67%) Bodily-Kinesthetic and (56%) Interpersonal. I watched the Multiple Intelligences Leave No Child Behind it was about how they focus on their multiple intelligence. They have PODS which is a period when the students can focus on something they are passionate about. The school teaches kids to learn their strengths and weaknesses. The teachers work on helping their strengths and tell them what they can do with those strengths. The type of school is struggling to keep these ideas alive which they didn’t think they would. The school also believes that testing takes away from focusing on what the kid’s strengths are. I liked this video and the idea behind it.

Task 6: I picked second grade. I chose the topic I Am Special. The lesson was to read two books about being different. One was about a fish and a frog and how the frog explored nature and the fish tried and realized he couldn’t because he is not a frog. The other story was about Chameleon. He tried to teach others to change colors but they realized that changing their appearance caused all kinds of new problems. In the first story the teacher would go around the class saying Kate is Kate, Peter is Peter. In the second story the teacher asked what do you think is the message of these two books. Usually the students will say to be you. It is good to teach them that you are who you are and it is ok, everyone is different.

Task 7: I found the question about The U.S. military budget is 7 times higher than the budget of China. I thought for sure China would be pretty close with our military. The question about powder cocaine to crack cocaine was 50 grams of powder or 5 grams of crack cocaine. I was shocked about that. I think it was shocking because cocaine is cocaine no matter if it is powder or crack. I think it should be the same amount to be convicted. It is just sad to judge people based on their economic status. I think rules are rules and should be the same for all. This quiz really opens your eyes to our society.

Task 8: I scored a 90%. I think it is important to know about netiquette so that you are aware of what is out on the web and you are aware of what you are doing. It important to teach others about netiquette because we hear a lot about kids doing bad things on the web, saying mean things, posting bad things, and bullying on the web. It is important as educator to keep them safe from bad things on the web and to keep them from doing bad things and getting in trouble. =^D.
