Collaborative Power Point Rubric (NETS I & III)

In the collaborative Power Point Rubric we as a class came up for a rubric for our PowerPoint presentation. Using Rcampus.com lets you create your own rubric as well as make one together as a class. It gives complete directions on how to make a rubric as well as the rubric itself tells students exactly what the teacher is looking for in the project they are assigning the rubric to. It is a fun and creative way to produce rubrics for your classroom.

Excel Crossword (NETS I & III)

In this assignment we made an Excel crossword puzzle. We made a crossword puzzle about ourselves. We made questions and then we entered them into the Excel Spreadsheet. We also learned how to make it show if you entered in the wrong letter or the right letter. You were able to enter in information and questions about your life and have others play the crossword puzzle. We could also make it colorful and fun for everyone.

Ed Tech Profile (NETS V)

In Ed Tech Profile we took a test on how much we know about technology and computers. We took multiple tests on different questions about how comfortable and how much we know about technology. At the end of the test they showed us different graphs about how we did. It also explained our assessment level. It was a good way to find out how much we knew about technology and also get a feel for how much more we could learn.

Wikki Page (NETS I, III, & V)

In Wiki Page we chose a tool, mine was Quizzes and polls, and wrote about a specific tool we picked. I picked Quibblo. It was a website that allows you to make quizzes as well as take quizzes. It was neat i got to make a Quiz about anything i wanted. I put in the questions and made the answers. I then posted it so others could take it. It is a great way to make quizzes for your students as well as have your students make quizzes for their classmates.

JCCS Internet Safety (NETS IV)

JCCS Internet Safetyeduc422ha

In this assignment we had to research about Internet Safety. We did this colloboratively using GoogleDocs to discuss copywriting. We were to read about different topics about the Internet and being safe. We then had to answer questions about the reading you did. We learned a lot about proper Internet use as well as knowing how to keep others safe and to be aware of what is out on the Internet.

Inspiration (NETS II & III)

We used Inspiration in order to show what each NET is about and what artifacts we have made in order to cover that specific NET. It shows the NETS for teachers and there are 5 NETS each with two artifacts that correspond to that NET. It meets the needs of the standards for teachers.

IMovie (I, III, IV, & V)

In Imovie we made a PSA announcement about HATE. We recently had problems with hate crimes at CSUSM. We decided to make a PSA about how hate is not ok and how it affects all of us. We used Imovie and imported video clips and pictures. We then added audio, different affects from one clip to another, and even added text. We also learned how to edit each clip.We learned how to make a mini movie or commercial about an important topic.

Newsletter (NETS I)

newslettereduc422ha

We made a newsletter using word. We made a name for our newsletter, a volume number, and a issue number. We then introduce students and parents to ourselves with an information part of the letter. We then talked about how we would incorporate technology into the class, and last we talked about an article we had read and how it deals with the class. We used different colors and formats to make the newsletter look more appealing. We also insert pictures and borders. It is a fun way to keep students and families informed.

Journal 10: Six Strategies to Connect Tech Intergration with School Improvement (NETS V)

Scott, F (2010). Six Strategies to Connect Tech Integration with School Improvement, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/MarchAprilNo6/Six_Strategies_to_Connect_Tech_Integrati.htm

In this article we look at goals to help with tech integration and schools. There are six cardinal steps to ensure that effective technology integration is part of school improvement. The first one is to connect with your schools vision and mission. We need to review and learn the instructional and curriculum goals of students based on analysis of disaggregated data. Two we need to manage our time. Establish long-, medium-, and short-term time frames to plan, implement, and evaluate your progress. You must be flexible and maintain a balance of the classroom. Three we need to learn standards. Learn the content, process, and context standards from the national staff development council to improve learning for students, teachers, and yourself. Four is to collaborate with others. Inventory capabilities and assists with administrators, teachers, parents, and peers. Five know your strengths and skills. List your strengths and greatest assets so that you can make the most of your opportunities. The last one is provide feedback and accountability. Compile and publish data for the services you provide to teachers.

How will this help the school?
I believe if the school, teachers, parents, and students are on the same page they can expand their technology awareness. I think helping each other out will only help the kids succeed as well as keep up with technology.

How will this help with teachers and students?
I think that if teachers know what they are talking about the kids will have a better relationship with the teacher. We know that we come from a technology based society and it is only going to grow, we as teachers need to keep up with the newest technology and help each other out. We could even learn from the students.

Journal 9: Playing with Skype (NETS I, III, & V)

Weller, T. J. (2010). Playing with skype. L&L—Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=March_April_No_6_1&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4516&ContentID=25508&DirectListComboInd

In this article we look at Skype. The school used Skype to help those who write great music connect with students who bring it to life and the families who are listening. The teacher brought composers to live concerts using technology. They used Skype to talk to a freelance musician and licensing agent to an 8th grade music class. He brought in composers and agreed to appear live at the concert via Skype and make the introduction for their pieces before the student ensembles performed them. The teacher believed we should use technology if it’s for a richer educational experience. The composers liked using Skype and use it to direct their explanations about their pieces. Skype makes it possible for educators to seek out experts in their subject areas.

How would this help what careers they want?
Skype would be good to use because we saw in this article that the teacher brought in composers to help the kids in the music class. Other classes could use Skype to talk to other experts and students can consider different careers and see what is included.

Is this hard to set up?
You need a computer with broadband internet connection, data projector, microphones, webcam, and adapters to pump up audio and feed through the sound system and projector screen. Skype is also free to sign up.

Journal 8: Navigate the Digital Rapids (NETS IV & V)

Lindsay, J., & Davis, V. (2010). Navigate the digital rapids. L&L—Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/MarchAprilNo6/Navigate_the_Digital_Rapids.htm

The article was about transforming yourself into a professional who can effectively research technology trends, monitor use of technology in school or district, avoid the fear factor that can easily paralyze you, and empower student-centered learning to create vibrant, exciting learning projects. Students want to use customized tools, such as mobile technology and customized learning environments. We want to involve in student-centered, globally connected projects, each student’s learning experiences becomes different, and each classroom becomes as unique as students and teachers who learn there. There are rules for being a good digital citizen. We need to monitor and be engaged to share experiences in a focused and monitored environment. We need to lead by example and don’t let students cross the line while in the digital world. The scariest part about this is the begging. You start out alone and collaborate with others who did this and learn from them. Some Flat classroom projects are Net Generation Education, Digiteen, Digiparents, and Eracism. We should not be scared out technology we should embrace it.

What happens if student crosses the line?
The teacher will report the student and the student will apologize to the educational network. Depending on how bad it is they can be suspended from the network. It is rare to ban students there has been 10 out of 3000.

How safe is this?
The educational network watches the network and monitors it for 24 hours a day. They also will monitor and take off anything that is not acceptable.

Journal 7: Beginners Guide to Interactive Virtual Fieldtrips (NETS I, III, & V)

Zanetis, J. (2010). The Beginner's guide to interactive virtual field trips. L&L—Learning & Leading with Technology, 37(6), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=March_April_No_6_1&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4516&ContentID=25443&DirectListComboInd

In this article we look at field trips in the virtual world. We see today that field trips are not being taken. Virtual fieldtrips are another option to learn in the class with out leaving. The kids can tour historic sites, witness scientific experiments, processes at museums or organizations, watch live demonstrations in the field, folk festivals, and mush more. There are different types of virtual field trips. One is Asynchronous VFTS which are websites that include text, audio, or video resources about specific topics. You can stream video tours of particular locations. There are different programs for VFT. E-Field Trips, Access Excellence Resource Center, and Gail Lovely’s site. The sites all deal with different VFT different experiences. Interactive VFT’s are synchronous, real-time experiences in which students in one location learn from informal educators in another location. With all these different virtual field trips student interact with experts and get real world angles on topics they are studying.

How can this be good for home-schooled students?
I think it would help them and they would interact with others. We always hear how home-schooled kids don’t get social interaction; this can help them to interact with the outside world.

How do we start this at our school?
You can apply for grants to have programs. Teacher can also give feedback on what to do and help you out. Some programs have fees and others are free. The schools can write it in the budget if they feel it is something they are engaging in learning.

Journal 6: Photo Sharing (NETS III & V)

I decided to look at photo sharing because I like to share pictures as well as it would be something fun to do in a classroom. I found a few websites that were listed on the Classroom 2.0 website. The one that many use was iphoto. Iphoto lets you upload photos and create slideshows but teachers wanted something a little more that it can use to work with photos. Another one Flickr, it is a yahoo product and free. You can make albums private or public, give a guest link for select people, and you choose who can view photos. Picasa web albums are another website. Picasa is a Google product and is similar to Flickr. The web albums on Picasa are easier than Flickr. The last one I found was Picnik and it is teamed up with Flickr. It provides free photo editing, easy to use, and powerful like Photoshop, the edit button in Flickr can also be used to edit Picnik. I also found out Picnik connects to Picasa. All of these sites are compatible with Mac and windows. I believe that using any of these sites can help develop a fun and exciting activity for students. The cool thing is they can share with their family and friends too.

NETS Power Point (NETS I & III)

Educ422powerpointha

We made a PowerPoint about NETS and how students meet those NETS. It was about student profiles for grades K-2 grade. I included ideas on how students can meet NET standards from ISTE. We used hyperlinks, pictures, colors, as well as providing examples on students meet those standards, what they can do to meet them.

Journal 4: Finding Students Who Learn Through Media (NETS I, IV, & V)

Bull, G., Alexander, C., & Ferster, B. (2010). Finding students who learn with media. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(5), retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=February_No_5_4&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4495&ContentID=25255&DirectListComboInd

In this article it talked about using primary source documents on websites. A program called PrimaryAccess MovieMaker allows student to combine their own test, primary sources images, and audio narration to create short online documentary films linked to social studies standards of learning. The article express that more than 20,000 short digital documentaries have been made. PA MovieMaker gained a great understanding of the conditions under which educators can best integrate student authorized media into the curriculum in a formal school setting. PAMM focuses on learning objectives rather than learning how to use movie making tools. It does take three classes to make the movie. 1 to create outline, storyboard, and script, 2 to assemble media and sequence it in the editor, and 3 the narration, title, and music. If you don’t have the time they also have a storyboard which only takes one class. Using this program helped the kids to perform well compared to those writing essays. It increases student engagement by incorporating student authorized media. Using both content and media demonstrated greater higher-order thinking and creativity in their work.

How can you use this in your class?
It would be fun to have them make a short historical documentary. I never had the chance to do this and it could be the class’s big project and they can even do a night where parents and faculty come to see the finished product.

What about students who don’t use this program?
I think if one class starts with it and shows how well they do and how things went, it will catch on to others. I think it is also important because they are incorporating technology into the school. You could also share between classes.

Journal 3: Keeping the Peace (NETS IV & V)

Levinson, M. (2010). Keeping the peace. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(5), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfmSection=February_No_5_4&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4495&ContentID=25237&DirectListComboId

The article was about the use of instant messaging in a middle school. The program caused problems between students, parents, and teachers. It discussed the appropriate use of technology at school and home. The school ended up looking at the pros and cons and stopped it. The problem was IM’s were sent in class and video tapings showing someone’s mom in p.j’s caused uproar. Parents were alarmed and didn’t know how to engage kids in conversations around appropriate use of technology at home. One group of parents thought it was fine and they needed to explore, the other side felt as if they were over stepped. The school gave permission to use these programs at home without parent permission. The iChat was blocked and students petitioned and protested. In the end it was banned and they now have steps to prepare everyone in advance for the introduction of new technologies. Adults and kids view technology different and schools need to figure out to manage this cultural divide.

How would you feel if it was your kids?
I would allow her to use the programs as long as she used them correctly as soon as she used them inappropriate I would not let her use it anymore.

Do you feel schools are jumping to fast into technology?
I don’t, I think we are actually slow and need to catch up. There are so many great programs and new things to learn in technology and the older generation needs to acknowledge that. We are only holding kids behind.

Journal 2: Using Podcasts to Devlelop a Global Perspective (NETS I, IV, & V)

Maguth, B.M., & Elliot, J. (2010). Using Podcasts to develop a global perspective. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(5), Retrieved from http://www.iste.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=February_No_5_4&Template=/MembersOnly.cfm&NavMenuID=4495&ContentID=25244&DirectListComboInd=D

The article was about a group of kids at a High School in Ohio. They used podcast to learn about other cultures. Educators were responsible for making students aware of global challenges and cultural diversities. Using digital technologies helped them to reach out to a global audience. The students recorded a debate on global issues, which had personalities holding different views and exchanging ideas. The group researched climate change. They found nations, politicians, and scientist who were involved. They had varying views and recorded the findings in a research journal. The podcast involved lots of planning, research, writing, and editing before even using them. They were able to edit mistakes, use background music, adjust volume, rearrange audio clips, and include commercial breaks. The students showcased their work on the internet. People in the community valued the efforts of the students and made it easier to understand a degree of depth on an important global issue, informed multiple perspectives, and gave chance to discuss current global issues.

Why is important to learn from other cultures?
You can always learn something new from someone else especially from a different culture. We usually only see our cultures point of view so when you hear someone else’s it makes you think differently.

Are Podcasts something every school should have?
I think it is something nice to have and you can do a lot but it can be expensive so you will have to see what your school allows you to do, if not try fundraising or finding a sponsor.

Journal 1: Computing in the Clouds (NETS III & V)

Johnson, D. (December/January 2009-2010). Computing in the Clouds. Learning and Leading with Technology, 37(4), retrieved fromhttp://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume3720092010/DecemberJanuaryNo4/Computing_in_the_Clouds.htm

Computing in the Clouds was an article about cloud computing. People are familiar with cloud computing as Google docs. Using cloud computing allows you to not worry about using different computers, emails, attachments, or flash drives. Cloud computing is a set of online productivity tools that allows the creation of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and surveys. It is a great program at a low cost for students and teachers. It’s nice because you can work from any computer and anywhere. Cloud computing is great because you can work on projects with a partner or group. Using this type of program can also cut the cost of computers. You can use a netbook which is not as expensive as a lap top, the thing you need on it is a browser. Almost with everything there are negatives. Some problems are one day it could cost money, you can’t do videos, cd, DVD’s, or big projects. The positive is Google has nothing to do with your data they can’t steal or use it. It sounds like we are seeing a huge and efficient change in the technology world.

What happens if internet crashes?
In the article it talked about that if the internet crashes Gmail and Google docs can work offline in conjuncture with Google gears, a browser applet.

Why would netbooks be better than laptops?
Netbooks are cheaper and if using a netbook you just need a browser and you can also use Delicious.com for bookmarking.

Social Bookmarking Journal Entry (Delicious.com) (NETS I & V)

Delicious.com is a website that keeps all the address of different websites you visit all on one page. You can find websites from friends as well as organize into different labels and tags the different websites you have saved. It is a great way to organize all the websites you enjoy as well as keep important websites altogether.

Task 1: I thought the Designs for Democracy was a great website for history. On the cite I saw a lot of drawings, paintings, and designs of previous history. It could be very helpful for kids to use as a primary source. Primary sources are great because kids can go back and find out what happened in the past and also see and have actual evidence of the past.

Task 2: The groups who are impacted by achievement gaps are between students who are white or black, rich or poor, looks at the differences in student performance in students from similar backgrounds across all school systems and classrooms. There are four distinct gaps in education; United States and other nations, black and Latino students and white students, between students of different income levels, and similar students schooled in different systems or regions. The three areas I chose were make sure your school has a mission statement that commits to cultural competence as an integral component of all it’s activities, network with other schools that are developing and implementing culturally competent systems, and engage school staff in discussions and activities that offer an opportunity to explore attitudes, beliefs, and values related to cultural diversity and cultural competence. I picked these ones because I felt that they had the most importance to them. I like to teach others about different cultures and beliefs. I also think it’s great to get others involved and to get other schools involved.

Task 3:I took the quiz and got cyber risky. I think the things listed were from when I was in high school because we are a lot meaner when we are younger and immature. I looked at Instant Messaging 101 and found that it is harder to trace someone behind and IM than someone through email. It talked about using a logging or monitoring product to help if anything goes wrong. The article said not to ban IM but to know what’s going on and be aware. It is important in a class that you know your kids are not using IM in the wrong way, it is however good to teach them how to use it the correct way and make it fun.

Task 4: In Subject Area I found kid stuff and there were a bunch of websites for kids to go on toe find out information. There is stuff on Disney, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and tons of other fun websites, that are safe and that kids can access. I could use this in class and have kids do partner work and tell us about the website they picked. Under Teacher’s Helpers I picked Bulletin Board Ideas. I picked this one because I love bulletin boards and I thought it was cool that it had all these ideas and showed you some of the boards. The page can help you and your class to have fun and interactive bulletin boards.

Task 5: My top three intelligences were (75%) Intrapersonal, (67%) Bodily-Kinesthetic and (56%) Interpersonal. I watched the Multiple Intelligences Leave No Child Behind it was about how they focus on their multiple intelligence. They have PODS which is a period when the students can focus on something they are passionate about. The school teaches kids to learn their strengths and weaknesses. The teachers work on helping their strengths and tell them what they can do with those strengths. The type of school is struggling to keep these ideas alive which they didn’t think they would. The school also believes that testing takes away from focusing on what the kid’s strengths are. I liked this video and the idea behind it.

Task 6: I picked second grade. I chose the topic I Am Special. The lesson was to read two books about being different. One was about a fish and a frog and how the frog explored nature and the fish tried and realized he couldn’t because he is not a frog. The other story was about Chameleon. He tried to teach others to change colors but they realized that changing their appearance caused all kinds of new problems. In the first story the teacher would go around the class saying Kate is Kate, Peter is Peter. In the second story the teacher asked what do you think is the message of these two books. Usually the students will say to be you. It is good to teach them that you are who you are and it is ok, everyone is different.

Task 7: I found the question about The U.S. military budget is 7 times higher than the budget of China. I thought for sure China would be pretty close with our military. The question about powder cocaine to crack cocaine was 50 grams of powder or 5 grams of crack cocaine. I was shocked about that. I think it was shocking because cocaine is cocaine no matter if it is powder or crack. I think it should be the same amount to be convicted. It is just sad to judge people based on their economic status. I think rules are rules and should be the same for all. This quiz really opens your eyes to our society.

Task 8: I scored a 90%. I think it is important to know about netiquette so that you are aware of what is out on the web and you are aware of what you are doing. It important to teach others about netiquette because we hear a lot about kids doing bad things on the web, saying mean things, posting bad things, and bullying on the web. It is important as educator to keep them safe from bad things on the web and to keep them from doing bad things and getting in trouble. =^D.

All about Heather

Hi my name is Heather Anaya and i am a senior here are CSUSM. I grew up in Temple City California. Many people don't know where that is so the next closes place that people will know is Pasadena. I was there until my freshman year in high school. I then moved to San Diego to continue my ice skating my sophomore year in High School. I went to La Rosa Elementary for k-3. I then went to Cloverly for 4-6. I then went to Oak Ave for 7th and 8th grade. I then went onto Temple City High School. After i moved i went to Scripps Ranch High School. I had moved to San Diego to continue my skating career and then got into Western Michigan University. I skated on their skating team there. I made it one year and came back to California. I then went to Mesa Community College to figure out what i wanted to do and ended up here at CSUSM.

My overall experience with technology is ok. I actually took CS301j last semester which taught me a lot. I learned how to do my own web page. It was very hard at first due to i did the class online and i am a visual learner and i need to see what i am doing or what it needs to look like. I think i did ok though getting an A in the class. I am a PC. I think i depend on technology a lot. I use it everyday and it keeps my life going. I have two versions of Microsoft office i have 2003 and 2007.

I think that in the COE the part that speaks to me is on being committed to diversity, equity, and social justice reflective through life-long learning. I also like that it is a student-centered education. I am excited to be a part of all these positive aspects of teaching. I heard from others that CSUSM had a great College of Education and that is what interests me about the school.
